Where we go from here … what this moment means for our work

November 7, 2024 |

Today, many of us are reflecting on the challenges ahead, as our nation grapples with deep divisions. Advancing the policies and solutions that Groundwork cares most deeply about will likely require even more effort, time, and commitment. But just because something is hard does not mean it isn’t worth doing. In fact, I believe that what lies ahead is some of the most important work that we will do together in our careers and in our lifetimes.

As Groundwork’s Program Director for Climate & Environment, I can assure you that our team and my colleagues are fully committed to addressing the climate crisis, advocating for healthy, resilient communities, and supporting a thriving democracy. We are dedicated to advancing local clean energy development, supporting farmers and families to build energy independence and security, while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. We will work tirelessly to preserve access to locally grown foods and healthy meals for families and children. We will ensure access to healthy, well-designed communities for people and the environment. We know that we must charge forward with this important work in a way that centers equity, celebrates diversity, and builds connection.

We know that now more than ever our work on the local level will be critically important.

We know that now more than ever our work on the local level will be critically important. For example, in our campaign to shutdown Line 5, we know that 2025 will bring several major court rulings and two key opportunities for you to engage–-the Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Impat Statement (EIS) process and the water resources permitting process with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Groundwork will be there at every turn to help you engage and lift your voice effectively. We will continue to push for consideration of the climate impact of the proposed Line 5 oil tunnel, respect for tribal sovereignty, to defend our Great Lakes, and so much more.

So please, stay engaged. Keep hoping and working toward a brighter future. You are part of a movement that is bigger than any single moment, and together, we’re building a future rooted in resilience and care for our communities. Together we stand with courage, joy, and love, because giving up is not and has never been an option. Our movement is sharp, nimble, and resolute—we are many, and we are here for the long haul!

In solidarity,

Ashley Rudzinski
Climate & Environment Program Director

P.S. One promising trend that gives me some hope is the fact that clean energy is already transforming our economy, creating momentum that cannot easily be reversed. The cost-effectiveness and resilience of clean energy make it essential, and we are encouraged by ongoing investment and growth in this sector. This will continue and so must we.
