Michael Goldman Brown, Jr., has loved trains for, well, nearly forever. His parents seeded his interest by reading him the children’s book Freight Train when he was a toddler, they took him to the local Lionel model train store, and they gave in to his pleas to ride on a train when he was about 9 years old. And his fascination and belief in trains has carried through. After experiencing the networks of Toronto, New York, and Chicago, he developed a desire to see such incredible passenger rail connections in his home state. Who better then, to join the Groundwork team working to make north-south passenger rail a reality in Michigan? “For me, being able to work on this project is a dream come true,” Michael says.

Michael joins the Transportation & Community Design team at a critical moment in the rail project. In 2024 the next essential phase of study and public outreach begins, and Michael is tasked with connecting to people in communities all along the north-south run to see how the new rail service could best serve their towns—both economically and culturally.

“We’ll be building a coalition of support around creation of the line and more broadly passenger rail expansion in Michigan,” Michael says. “For more transit-minded communities, transportation can blossom to encourage bus and other options to and from the train stations.”
