Groundwork Financial Director Jennifer Fike earned a business degree from the University of Michigan, and she’s spent her career steeped in accounting. But for Jen, her interest in the numbers has always been important as a means to a better-world goal, a way to make sure groups doing important work are financially sound so their work can continue and gain momentum. Sharing the message that the numbers tell has also been a focus for Jen. “All staff need to understand the financials so we can make the best decisions from a financial perspective,” she says.

For Jen, the most rewarding part of her work is simply being able to make a difference. “Whether it’s being able to understand financial statements, pitch in with a grant budget, or help get funding through a grant proposal, I love seeing programs grow and thrive, and I love knowing that I’ve contributed from the financial side,” she says.

Looking ahead, Jen is excited about being part of Groundwork’s world of innovative ideas, and is excited to bring her financial expertise to the mix. “I like people with idealism,” she says. “But I come from the financial angle. And I think, Can we figure this out? Can we truly make it happen? I like being able to answer those questions. That’s an area where I’m excited to contribute.”

Favorite spots in northern Michigan

Porcupine Mountains State Park. I’ve been there many times, and hiking in the Porcupine Mountains and being on Lake Superior just holds a special place in my heart.

What's always in your fridge?

Half-and-half for coffee … and yogurt, I eat a lot of yogurt … and lettuce. We’ve had a CSA for 25 years, so we usually have carrots, other root vegetables, and lettuce.
