Solar on home

Record number of Access MI Solar homes despite expired tax credits

July 18, 2026 |

We just wrapped up the 2026 Access MI Solar group-buy solar discount program, and we’re here to shout out we set a new all-time high record for participants!

We love setting a new record, but what’s impressive times 10 is that the record was set with the federal tax credits expired. The strength of the program this year is testament to people’s trust in the solar technology to not only help slow climate change but also to control rising energy costs as we all hear of shocking increases predicted in coming years.

With support from partners at Leelanau Energy and solar contractor CBS Solar, northern Michiganders can still invest in clean energy while taking charge of their utility bills, so stay tuned for when we announce the 2027 program at the end of this year.

This year’s program hit record numbers, with 19 households, including our first business, bringing photovoltaic power to their homes and businesses!

This year’s program hit record numbers, with 19 households, including our first business, bringing photovoltaic power to their homes and businesses! That means, 174.7 kW of total clean electricity and 99.8 kW of battery storage added throughout our communities!

As we celebrate these impressive numbers, it’s important to remember that behind each statistic are real homeowners taking control of their energy future. Below is a story straight from a community member who signed up for this year’s program and already has panels on his rooftops today!

Traverse City resident Chris Symons had always felt that solar panels would be part of his permanent home; it was mostly a matter of when the right opportunity would come along. Then came Access MI Solar. Three months after signing a contract with CBS Solar, he has a 4.4 kW system on his roof that will pay for itself in six years or sooner – providing the ability to charge his parents’ electric vehicle using the energy his home will produce.

“I think the solar panels are one of those things where it feels like the more economical solution AND the more environmental solution is the same solution.”

For Chris, solar energy provides not only energy resilience and no energy bills, but also the ability to connect with his community. Subtly collecting sun rays off his roof, these solar panels have become an opportunity to converse with neighbors, share his story, and prove solar is a feasible option for power generation.

“I think the community connection, the neighborhood connection, that is what Groundwork facilitates, and that’s why I’m a big fan.”
