Everyone in the MLUI office is deeply saddened and frustrated by the violent hit-and-run that occurred in Traverse City last week that resulted in the death of a 29-year-old woman.
The Traverse City resident was biking to her neighborhood home near F&M Park when she was struck by a large vehicle and dragged for more than a block.
Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends.
We don’t think this tragedy is about bike safety. We believe that this is an act of one irrational individual who intentionally wants to bring harm to another human being.
Still, it’s a very clear reminder to the broader community that any aggressive behavior between motorists and cyclists on our streets could result in serious harm or death.
Must of us on staff bike in Traverse City every day, and we’ve seen some of the aggressive behavior displayed by travelers speeding through town.
We’re hopeful that the public awareness around this tragic event will result in a broader conversation about aggressive behavior and improved safety and mobility in the region.
