Food & Farming

With roots firmly embedded in the pro-health, pro-environment, and pro-economy principles of a local food system, the Groundwork Food and Farming team creates markets for local farmers, and helps connect locally grown food to school children, food pantry clients and families across the state.

While much of our work begins locally in northwest lower Michigan, one of our guiding missions is to inspire a statewide culture of healthy, locally raised food.

Traverse House Gets Juicy

Traverse House Clubhouse is a supportive space for members of our community who face mental health issues. With members visiting daily for meals and pantry offerings, there is ample opportunity to provide quality nutrition and health education on a consistent basis. And, it makes Traverse House a great choice for the 2016 “Building Healthy Communities” grant through Taste the Local Difference®.

A Ride to Rescue Fresh Foods

The Grand Traverse area has a program dedicated to rescuing usable food from heading to the landfill and supporting families who need food on their table. Food Rescue, a project of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, is the bridge that connects surplus and about-to-expire foods from retailers and farmers to food pantries and meal sites.
