With roots firmly embedded in the pro-health, pro-environment, and pro-economy principles of a local food system, the Groundwork Food and Farming team creates markets for local farmers, and helps connect locally grown food to school children, food pantry clients and families across the state.
While much of our work begins locally in northwest lower Michigan, one of our guiding missions is to inspire a statewide culture of healthy, locally raised food.

Groundwork hires Jennifer Schaap, expands into Northern Farms Foodshed
The Groundwork Center in early April hired Jennifer Schaap to join the Traverse City-based nonprofit’s food and farming program team. Schaap, a longtime Petoskey resident, brings a wealth of experience, relationships, and knowledge about the regional food system.
Agriculture Forum: Mini-Grants Involve 30 Organizations
With support from Groundwork, the Northwest Michigan Food and Farming Network began in 2016 awarding mini-grants -small amounts of seed money for innovative, collaborative projects to enhance our local food system.
TentCraft Innovates, Creates Local Jobs, Now Offers Farm to Workplace Benefits
The innovative pop-up tent maker TentCraft is a leader in attracting knowledge-based talent to Traverse City. The company has also created dozens of manufacturing jobs, has an “infants in the workplace” program, and recently launched a CSA-based employee wellness plan.
