End of the Line

End of the Line: Great Lakes over Big Oil

April 17, 2025 |

Please join Groundwork and our statewide coalition partners for an in-person and live-streamed event on June 4th, 2025. Together, we’ll hear from key experts—like international tunnel expert Brian O’Mara—about the latest on Line 5, plus learn ways you can take action at this critical moment.

The federal administration has fast-tracked the Line 5 tunnel permit and your voice is more important now than ever!

(Bonus: Bill McKibben, who was central to igniting the Line 5 movement, can’t make this one, but has agreed to provide a video to remind us of the importance of staying in this fight!)

Who: Anyone who loves the Great Lakes!
What: End of the Line: Great Lakes Over Big Oil
When: Wednesday, June 4, 6–8pm
Where: The Alluvion (2nd floor of Commongrounds)
414 E. Eighth Street, Traverse City, MI 49686
How: Register in-person or online (free).

Your $25 in-person ticket includes a free drink, networking with local advocates and like-minded folks, and a chance to get plugged into the movement to shut down Line 5 for good. Big updates and action opportunities will be shared—this is one you won’t want to miss. (Virtual participation is free!)

Background: Line 5, operated by Canadian oil giant Enbridge, is a damaged 72-year-old pipeline that runs through the heart of the Great Lakes at the Straits of Mackinac. Enbridge wants to replace the Straits section with a dangerous tunnel, drilling through the publicly protected and geologically unstable bottomlands and threatening our fresh water, the climate, and tribal treaty rights in the process.

This important event will bring together expert voices to break it all down:

  • Why action at this federal fast-track moment is so essential
  • The engineering risks of tunneling under the Straits
  • The legal landscape and tribal sovereignty concerns
  • The Michigan EGLE and Army Corps permitting process
  • How you can take meaningful action to stop the tunnel and shutdown Line 5 for good.

Parking Note: Limited parking is available at Commongrounds. Additional free parking after 5pm can be found at the Governmental Center lot at E. Eighth St. & Boardman Ave., just a half-block away.

RSVP in-person or online (free) now, and be part of the movement!
