Consultant announced for next essential study for North+South Passenger Rail

October 10, 2024 |

Michigan’s North-South Passenger Rail Project has reached another big milestone!

After a thorough and competitive selection process, we are thrilled to announce that the Cadillac/Wexford Transit Authority (WexExpress) and Groundwork have selected WSP as the lead consultant to work on the second phase of the rail project. With 10 offices in Michigan, most of the team working on this project lives and works along the proposed line.

The study that WSP is conducting is considered one of the most important steps in the development of a new rail service.

The study that WSP is conducting is considered one of the most important steps in the development of a new rail service because it will take a deep dive into what is needed for the service to run. Once this next phase is complete, the project will be eligible to apply for and be a top contender for federal funds needed to bring the line to fruition.

WSP brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will help advance the vision for enhanced passenger rail in Northern Michigan. Some of their recent projects include work on the Atlanta-Savannah Intercity Passenger Rail Study, they worked to increase speeds on the Chicago to St. Louis route, and they authored the Midwest Regional Rail Plan which creates the vision for intercity connections over the next 40 years.

PHASE TWO OVERVIEW

Ridership and Market Demand: After investigating local demographics, employment patterns, and where people are traveling more generally, the team will estimate likely ridership and make recommendations for station area investments.

Infrastructure Analysis: Evaluating the state of repair of tracks and associated infrastructure, providing estimates for the cost of upgrades, and creating a priority list of improvements the corridor requires.

Proposed Route and Service Options: Examining how, where, and when the new service will operate, and what is needed to run the service.

Economic and Financial Analysis: Estimating revenues and developing a financial plan for the service.

Management and Governance Structure: Determining how the service will be organized, structured, and managed.

Community Engagement: Communicating with stakeholders throughout the process to address needs and gather community thoughts and ideas.

This is a big moment for the project. With WSP on board, we can dive into the next phase of planning and development, moving us closer to our goal of a modern train service that offers families and workers a safe, enjoyable, and eco-friendly way to travel across the state!
